Is this a Hidden Gem?

As golf clubs go, Mid Herts Golf Club is well known and indeed highly rated for its superb course, the undulating greens and splendid heathland fairways. But it’s probably not so obvious that our local Golf Club has a bar snack menu which caters for all comers, not just its members.

That’s right, as Mid Herts has what is known as an ‘open license’; you don’t have to be a club member or pay any member fees to visit this smashing venue to enjoy the food, the service, the bar and of course the lovely views of the course from the large picture windows in the clubhouse restaurant and bar.

The well-priced Lunch time snacks range from various fully loaded sandwiches to omelettes, scampi and salads - the popular golfer’s breakfast is always available too. The Club hosts Sunday Carvery style lunches, usually once per month, and afternoon tea served in vintage style crockery is available, subject to numbers and booking.

If it’s a special occasion or there is a group of you that like the idea of an unhurried lunch in a traditional setting, provided there is a minimum of twelve people attending, the chef will prepare a bespoke menu just for you.

Whilst you can just turn up for mid-week lunch, it’s probably best to check availability and, if you want to, reserve a table.

My friends and I did actually book a table, although once we arrived we realised that it wasn’t necessary as honestly there weren’t that many people there - probably because most local people don’t realise just what is available for members of the public at their local golf club.

We checked out the lunch menu and ordered our food along with drinks at the bar and as my friends and I caught up on conversation we couldn’t help but admire the view out across the beautiful scenery of the golf course.

The service was friendly and efficient and all six of us, without exception, enjoyed our food - which ranged from sandwiches to omelettes to the very large golfers grill, then coffee and cake for dessert.

Good prices and easy parking just added to the plus points of a mid week lunch at Mid herts Golf Club – so next time you are looking for somewhere to go, give it a try.
