Local Man to Raise Funds for the Homeless

It all started earlier this year when local man and The Swan pub regular Steve France wanted to raise money for Homeless Charity Open Door.

So along with help from the staff and customers of local pubs, the Swan and the Elephant and Castle, Steve set out to raise £5000 for this worthy cause.

There have been many fund raising events over recent months including a Treasure Hunt, Auction and two Race Nights, a disco and a tombola. Steve also volunteered to sleep rough for at least one night during the winter months, which he did earlier in the year with a follow up sleep out at Oaklands College scheduled for 7th December which will raise awareness and more funds from his many sponsors. Another innovative  fund raising idea introduced by Steve are friendship dinner parties where groups of friends get together at each other’s houses for dinner in perhaps the usual way , but unusually there’s a charge of £10  per head and the funds raised go towards Steve’s target .

Open Door helps vulnerable adults in the St Albans area. The Charity set up the night shelter in Bricket Road, which helps over 500 people each year with short term accommodation needs, together with drop-in and street outreach.

This service is managed by Hightown Housing Association, with professional staff and volunteers supporting homeless people in planning a more secure and independent future.

The drop-in service offers a range of support and advice, including housing and health issues. The people using the service may be homeless, sleeping rough or experiencing other difficulties. It offers a warm welcome, food and drink and a safe place to be. Users have internet access to information about education, training and employment opportunities.

Steve says he raised an impressive  £3000 so far, if you would like to contribute
